Innovative Solution

The Cantilever Bridge (CLB) was designed with an emphasis on safety, reliability, ease of operation, easy replaceability of components, low maintenance and high endurance:

  • Fully self-contained and self-projecting piece of equipment.
  • Uses a pulling system to move forward over previously completed bents.
  • Installs piles to its left and right using side and extension templates.
  • Construction speed can reach two to three complete 24-metre spans per week, including all piling works, placing of headstocks and installation of pre-stressed roadway beams.

CLB Dimensions

  • The CLB main frame is the core structure (box girder, transverse beam, portal frame) to which all the other structures are connected. It sits on three headstocks spaced

CLB Equipment

  • Omni-directional front piling frame. The CLB has a side piling template is capable of installing vertical piles of various sizes and the hydraulically operated guides allow for corrections up to 250mm in all directions. Hydraulically operated pile guides on all piling frames
  • Two spud piles are placed in jacking houses near the front of the CLB on the outside of bridge girders. The spud piles serve as temporary supports for the front of the CLB until the permanent structure is completed and the CLB load is transferred to it. The capacity of the 1.5m stroke jacking system for each spud pile is 250t, which exceeds the required maximum preloading force of 220t.

  • Jack house maximum stroke: 1.5m
  • Two Jenmon gantry cranes with a S.W.L of 70MT (ea). The gantries travel across the railing on the CLB main girders and are utilized to install the roadway. They can also be utilized to offload the structural components onto the trestle before the main crane can install them
  • CLB crane carrier is designed to accommodate cranes of various sizes. The track motors of the crane are connected directly to the hydraulic motors of the bogies. This simplifies the operational requirements of the crane
  • The Main Piling Template of the CLB is designed to have 3-axis motion and can install batter piles of various sizes and lengths. The template is controlled with a Hydraulic Power Unit installed on the CLB Platform.
  • Generators and hydraulic power packs
  • Two winches for forward movement of the cantilever bridge
  • On the sides of the main girders there are multipe outiggers to support offices, lunch rooms, storage containers, generators, and any other auxillary equipment which are required on a day-to-day basis.
  • Various work platforms and structures to provide access to over water work areas
  • 3 sets of roller boxes support the main giders at tall times. There are 6 x 100-XT and 6 x 300 XT Hillman roller boxes available. The 300MT roller boxes available. Hilman rollers for forward movement of cantilever bridge
  • The self-propelled trailer (SPT) is used to transport all structural components up to 70MT and other materials from the laydown to the CLB and back. All wheels of the SPT can be hydraulically steered and locked and the driver can operate the vehicle from the cabins installed on both ends.

Modern Engineering

  • The Launching Girder (LG) is a purpose-built steel frame designed for moving the pipe rack or preassembled rack (PAR) modules along the trestle from their intiial position to the required installation location.
  • 93m long x 9.9m wide x 1.2m high
  • LG weighs aproximately 275MT and requires support over three bents spaced 24m apart when pocking up or transporting a PAR module. It is capable of transporting modules weighing up to 240MT
  • The main structure consists of five modules bolted together by splice connections. Each module is built from two custom beams on either side of 1.2m deep with a flange width of 500mm. The main frame beams are set at 9m center-to-center interconnected by smaller-sized beams and bracing. The deck, top of beam level, is covered with hot dipped galvanized (HDG) grating to provide work access.

LG Dimensions

  • The skidding of the launching girder is done using a traction and tension winch. The traction winch is located at the rear of the LG and is used for transporting the LG via a tensioned wire rope Ø38.1mm.

  • The tension winch acts as an anchor point and is located at the starting position of the LG. The tension winch has a spooling capacity for 1000m of ø38.1mm wire and a pulling capacity of 45MT at the first layer with a hauling speed of 2 m/min.

Equipment

  • The LG is equipped with a longitudinal positioning frame known as Hook-On-Jack (HOJ), which stops the LG at the destined location and acts as a high precision tool in the final longitudinal positioning of the LG.
  • The LG is supported by a minimum of 6 Hillman roller boxes at all times. There are 36x150-XNTW and 36x200-XNTW roller boxes available. The 200MT roller boxes have transverse restraints to keep the LG aligned while in motion.
  • The LG comes with hydraulics to support the installation of PAR Modules. The equalizing jacks are used for compensating the deflection in the PAR Modules experienced by LG during its motion. Quantity: 10 ea 100 Ton, Double Acting, 70MPA. Stroke 250mm.
  • The PAR jacking cylinders are used for raising and lowering the PAR Module off from the LG. Quantity: 30 Bore 203mm x Rod 165” x 2100mm stroke. Push: 623 kN @ 192 Bar. Pull: 75 kN @ 68 Bar. Integral mounted counterbalance valve. Internal Linear Variable Displacement Transducer (LVDT).
  • There are a total of three electrically driven hydraulic power units (HPUs) that power the hydraulics for both equalizing jacks and PAR Jacking cylinders. Quantity: 3. Operates 12 PAR jacking cylinders and 6 equalizing jacks. Hoses: 8 R2T hose with quick disconnect fittings (24 total per HPU, PAR Main Cylinders). Hoses: 6 R2T hose with quick disconnect fittings (12 total per HPU, Equalizing Jacks). HPU control system - Touch screen control panels accessible from roadway - PLC controlled – Jack force equalizing and PAR cylinder levelling - PAR main cylinders position displacement synchronized using LVDT - Equalizing jacks pressure controlled.

Our team has successfully delivered a challenging scope of work requiring constructing a long trestle over sensitive areas for a complex, schedule critical LNG project.  The specialty equipment selected for this project involved a Cantilever Bridge and Launching Girder.  Both assets are now for sale and will be the difference maker for a project that needs to be built safely and efficiently in an area where access and conventional construction methods are not readily available. Using enhanced construction equipment ensures projects are delivered safely and on schedule, while minimizing the environmental impact of the work.

    Cantilever Bridge, Launching Girder

    The $40 billion Kitimat project includes a liquefaction facility, a 670 km pipeline from Dawson Creek and a marine terminal. Construction activities began in October 2018, with a target in-service date of the middle of the next decade. At full capacity, the terminal will convert and export as much as 26 million tons of LNG per year, primarily to Asia. This represents roughly 20 percent of overall gas production in Canada. Clough CEO and managing director Peter Bennett said: “We are extremely pleased by the award of this scope. This project award also represents Clough’s first major international marine contract since 2010.”

    The project involved the design and construction of a loading jetty, which included a typical piled with crossheads trestle with concrete superstructure, a loading platform for LNG and LPG / condensate, the provision of seawater intake including pump casing and slope protection, waste water outfall structures, navigation aids, marine operations, corrosion and cathodic protection systems. The project allowed for gas to be transported from offshore.
